a day in the life of...

Holli Rogers, Net-a-Porter’s Buying Director

As luxury fashion has begun to embrace clicks over bricks, Net-a-Porter has become one of the industry’s most important retailers. What that means for buying director Holli Rogers is a month of extra busy days, where meetings and buying appointments fill in the gaps between shows. Let’s just say there isn’t much time for leisurely lunches at Café de Flore. Here’s what Holli did yesterday.

October 7, 2009
8 a.m. I thought about going for a run around the Tuileries but realized I had too many orders to review. I got off to a late start after the Fendi party last night. Pixie Lott performed; she’s got such a great voice. Prince was in the house. Sadly, he didn’t sing.

9 a.m. A quick agenda meeting with our online editor Mo White to discuss new trends for spring.

9:30 a.m. The RM by Roland Mouret show is about to take place at the lovely Musée de l’Homme. Those stairs are treacherous in heels, but Roland is worth it. We watched Christian Louboutin leaving on his scooter, dodging traffic. Not only do we love his shoes, but also his love of life.

10:30 a.m. A walk-through with the Oscar de la Renta crew. It’s always great to see the team in Europe and hang out in their fabulous apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower. Seeing Karl [Monge, VP of international sales] in his bow tie is always a good start to the day!

12 p.m. Time for a quick catch-up with Jason, our shoe buyer, to discuss possible new brands and to grab a snack to get me through the long day still to unfold.

12:30 p.m. At the Paul & Joe show. It’s always great fun and given that Emmanuelle Alt styles it, it’s got a cool vibe.

2 p.m. A meeting with NewBark. We love these girls and their slick comfy shoes. They’re the new shoe revolution. They will change your life.

3 p.m. YSL walk-through. It’s exciting editing the best pieces and selecting exclusive styles for the site.

4:30 p.m. At the Miu Miu show in the grand venue on Avenue Foch. I do wish this was my Paris home! They always creatively adapt the interior to change the mood of the room. The wall projections are very cool.

6 p.m. In the car en route across town to the Stella McCartney showroom, I view orders, check e-mails, and reshuffle the diary for the next few days. We have six members of the team in Paris so it takes serious coordination to squeeze everything in.

6:30 p.m. We finally arrive in the Marais at Stella. This collection is about ease and fun—a great camouflage print juxtaposed with a pretty floral group. The Birkenstock-style heels are also super cool.

7:30 p.m. I grab a quick drink with the team. Thankfully, our driver is equipped with umbrellas as a torrential downpour ensues. My rubber-soled Camilla Skovgaard heels are the perfect foil.

9 p.m. John Galliano is in the 13th arrondissement at an old warehouse. He’s back to form. What a spectacular show! It really offset all the austere collections that we’ve seen this past week, plus we got to walk out with Prince. What a way to end the fashion whirlwind!

10 p.m. Rushed back to hotel to change for an informal dinner with the Stella crew.

12 a.m. Time to sleep and get myself organized in preparation for yet another action-packed day tomorrow!
